A true weekend warrior who balances his love for architecture and surfing perfectly, Buji Libarnes of Coast Thru Life captured a unique feeling of stoke in his latest video “Balerinas” during the Aloha Boardsports and Travel Factor Surf and Music Festival held in Baler last year.

Coast Thru Life is about a group of sunburnt friends who found themselves, and each other through surfing. They hope to inspire others to appreciate life and find sunshine in every corner. Coast Thru Life celebrates the golden age of surfing when life was simple and surfing was pure fun. Coast Thru Life advocates love of our ocean playground and playmates whom they share it with.

“It’s not just always about ripping, tearing, and shredding. Oftentimes, you just gotta coast”.

What better way for Manila surf enthusiasts to mark the arrival of the surf season than by coming together for an invasion of friendly surf competition, stoke, good vibes and good times in one of the country’s top-of-mind surf destinations?

With its commitment to promote and develop the sport of surfing amongst Manila residents, the Manila Surfers Association, set to make waves again, this time in partnership with the Philippines’ pioneer sports action store and brand, Stoked Inc, and the Province of Aurora, will conduct the second installment of the Siege of Baler on November 24 and 25, 2012 – an annual event that provides the setting for Manila surfers to compete with fellow weekend warriors in a fun and exciting atmosphere that will be held in one of the top surf destinations in the country, BALER.

Along the Pacific Coast: The Costa Pacifica Raintree Experience

About five to six hour drive from the bustling city of Manila, facing the iconic  Sabang Beach in Baler Aurora, Costa Pacifica Raintree is an ideal place to relax, have fun and make the most out it while enjoying the scenic view of the beach.

The enigmatic sunrise view of Sabang beach.

Baler, the birth place of Philippine surfing, after it was featured in the classic 1979 movie “Apocalypse Now,” Baler became the surfers paradise. Every year, thousands of beach goers, surfers and enthusiasts flock to Baler to experience the warm tropical beach and the long glassy peeling waves which then became the trademark of Baler.

Screen Shot 2013-10-12 at 12.17.05 PM

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted with the cheerful and hospitable hotel staff. Am I in Baler? That question lingered in my mind. The last time I was in Baler was during the Aurora Surfing Cup last November 2012. Costa Pacifica was still under construction back then.

Boasting its 106 well furnished and stylish rooms and suites, you’ll definitely feel the comfort of your home away from home. Costa Pacifica’s facilities will also help you relieve all the stress that you had after a long week at the office and will give you a vibrant feel with its outdoor pool, a kid’s activity room for your little ones as well as a gym to set a tone for your daily work out regimen.

Eat, eat and eat.

After a whole morning surfing session, you may dine in at Costa Pacifica’s two new restaurants: The Beach House and Cafe Rosa. The Beach house offers a delectable treat with an all day dining both local and international cuisine. Mouth watering dishes will suit your fine dining experience with a touch of local vibe feel for a reasonable price.

The best breakfast for early morning risers.

Want to take an afternoon nap?

Costa Pacifica’s minimalist style will give you a dose of pampering treatment with the finest view of Sabang beach. The light-colored and well-lit rooms emulate the lovely beach as well.

Time for an afternoon swim.

The swimming pool is one of the highlights of my stay at Costa Pacifica.

You should learn how to surf.

Charlie Does, a thriving little surf shop located on the other side of the road  offers surf lessons and surfboard rentals. The name of the Shop Charlie was derived from the character Colonel Kilgore from the movie “Apocalypse Now” when he said: “Charlie don’t surf,” the Colonel is referring to the surf spot known as Charlie’s point and also from an English band named “The Clash” released a track called “Charlie don’t Surf.”

Last February 13-16 2014, the 8th Aurora Surf Challenge took place in the famous Sabang beach in Baler, Aurora. This has been an annual event organized by the Aurora Surfriders Association Inc., and the Province of Aurora with the cooperation of the Tourism Office of Aurora.

Hundreds of spectators gathered in the shores of Sabang beach to witness a momentous annual surf event in Baler Aurora.

The (Weather) Conditions

In watching and in participating in a surf competition, there are different factors to consider aside from the practice a participant does prior to the competition. There’s a scoring system, knowing which heat you are in, and of course, the conditions of the area where the competition will take place.

DSC_0553Sets coming in.

As for the 8th Aurora Surf Challenge, there were decent-sized swells with a strong onshore wind that made the conditions difficult at times, especially during the last day; thus, it made the competition more interesting to watch.

Check out this film by Robin Lee about their surf adventure in the Philippines featuring the birth place of Philippine surfing, Baler, Aurora.

“There are many surf spots to go in the Philippines but they are becoming incredible popular due to the high quality of waves and as I stated earlier, cheap Island life. So we picked Baler, a lesser known spot where we were hoping for less crowds. Baler delivered. Not only were we among the few few foreigners but the lineups were generally small and in some spots we were the only ones there. The locals there were super friendly and happy to show us around to the best spots and give us pointers along the way. Being only a year into surfing myself this was awesome!”
